What is Ransomware?

Ransomware is a type of malware that encrypts the user's files or locks the user's screen until a ransom is paid. The ransom, which is usually in the form of a cryptocurrency such as Bitcoin, is demanded by the attacker in order to unlock the files or screen.

Ransomware has become a major problem in recent years, with new variants of the malware being released on a regular basis. The WannaCry ransomware attack in May 2017, for example, infected more than 230,000 computers in over 150 countries.

There are several ways to protect yourself from ransomware attacks. The most important is to always keep your computer up to date with the latest security patches, and to use a good antivirus program.

You should also be careful when opening email attachments and clicking on links, and never pay the ransom if you are infected. If you are infected with ransomware, there are several ways to try and recover your files.

One is to use a tool such as Shadow Explorer to try and restore the files from a previous backup. If you do not have a backup, you may be able to decrypt your files using a tool such as ransomware decryption.
