What is a domain name?

A domain name is the name of a website. It is the address that you type into a web browser to visit a website.

Domain names are purchased from a domain name registrar. Domain names can be used to create a website, email address, or to forward to another website. Domain names must be unique. The owner of a domain name is the registrant. The registrant is responsible for renewing the domain name registration and for keeping contact information up to date. The registrar is the company that sells and manages domain names. Some common registrars are GoDaddy, NameCheap, and Network Solutions. Domain names can be registered for a period of one to ten years. The cost of a domain name registration varies depending on the registrar. The most common domain name extension is .com. Some other common domain name extensions are .net, .org, .info, and .biz.
