What is a Cyber Attack?

Updated: May 22, 2023

A cyber attack is an attempt to disrupt, deny, degrade, or destroy information resident in computers and computer networks. The term "cyberattack" is often used interchangeably with "cyberwar fare."

Cyberattacks can be carried out by governments, corporations, individuals, and any other actors capable of developing sufficient cyber attack tools and methods.

In general, cyber attacks are often characterised by attribution problems and the use of stealth or deception to mask attack origins, resources and objectives.

Cyberattacks can be carried out through the internet using programs that target a computer system's vulnerabilities and exploit them to gain access to the targeted computer systems. Cyberattacks are also known as computer network attacks, intrusions or hackings.

Online attacks may also involve malware and viruses, which are programs that can infiltrate, damage or disrupt computers using malicious software such as worms, Trojan horses, rootkits and spyware.
